At Fulwell Infant School Academy, our Geography curriculum is designed to develop children’s understanding of the world around them and inspire a lifelong interest in places, people and environments. In the Early Years Foundation Stage, Geography is taught through the Understanding the World area of learning, where children explore their local environment, seasonal change, weather, communities and the wider world. They begin to develop an understanding of similarities and differences between places, people and cultures.
As children move through the school, they extend their knowledge from Fulwell and Sunderland to the United Kingdom and beyond. Through fieldwork, map work and practical investigations, children learn about human and physical features, weather, climate, countries and continents. Children revisit key geographical skills throughout the school so that knowledge, vocabulary and map skills are remembered and built upon year after year. Our coastal location provides rich opportunities for children to explore their local environment, while studies of other countries and cultures help them understand similarities and differences across the world. By developing observation, enquiry and mapping skills, children gain the confidence to ask questions and make sense of the places around them.
