Forest School

At Fulwell Infant School Academy, we are proud to offer Forest School experiences which help children develop confidence, resilience, independence and a love of the outdoors.

Our Forest School provision currently runs as an after-school club led by a fully trained Forest School leader. Sessions provide children with exciting opportunities to explore, investigate and learn through hands-on outdoor experiences in a safe and nurturing environment.

Our Forest School area includes:

  • A dedicated fire pit area for supervised campfire activities
  • “Hagrid’s Hut” outdoor classroom space
  • A wide range of outdoor learning equipment and resources
  • Natural spaces for exploration, den building, problem solving and imaginative play

Children take part in a variety of activities designed to encourage teamwork, creativity, curiosity and risk awareness. Experiences may include:

  • Nature exploration and wildlife activities
  • Outdoor crafts and creative projects
  • Shelter building
  • Tool use (under close supervision)
  • Campfire cooking and storytelling
  • Team games and challenges
  • We firmly believe that learning outdoors supports children’s wellbeing, communication skills, confidence and emotional development, whilst also helping them to develop respect and care for the natural world.
  • Our Forest School sessions are always highly popular with children and provide memorable experiences which complement learning within the classroom.

1. Snow Builders

“When the snow arrived, our Forest School became a winter wonderland. Using buckets, teamwork and plenty of imagination, the children designed and built their own snow castles, developing problem-solving skills, perseverance and creativity.”

2. Den Builders

“Working together to build shelters is always a favourite Forest School activity. Children learn to cooperate, share ideas and overcome challenges as they transform natural materials into dens, hideaways and outdoor homes.”

3. Explorers on a Mission

“Armed with maps, clues and curiosity, our young explorers set off on outdoor adventures. Activities like these develop communication, observation and teamwork while helping children build confidence in the natural world.”

4. Knot Tying and Rope Skills

“Forest School introduces children to practical outdoor skills. From learning how to tie simple knots to balancing on rope challenges, children develop resilience, concentration and a real sense of achievement.”

5. Outdoor Cooking and Fire Skills

“Gathering around the fire circle creates opportunities for children to learn new skills, work safely and enjoy shared experiences. Whether preparing food or listening to stories, these moments create lasting memories.”

6. Nature Detectives

“There is always something fascinating to discover outdoors. Using magnifying glasses and their own keen observation skills, children investigate minibeasts, leaves, bark and other natural treasures.”

7. Natural Art

“Nature provides endless inspiration. Children use leaves, seeds, sticks and natural materials to create unique works of art while exploring colour, texture and pattern.”

8. Storytelling in the Woods

“Stories come alive at Forest School. Through storytelling, discussion and imaginative play, children develop language, listening skills and a love of learning outdoors.”

9. What Can We Create?

“With a few sticks, some string and a lot of imagination, children become designers, inventors and creators. Open-ended activities encourage creativity, problem solving and independent thinking.”

10. The Great Net Crawl

“Forest School encourages children to take safe risks and challenge themselves. Crawling, climbing and navigating obstacles helps develop confidence, resilience and physical coordination.”

11. Rain or Shine Adventures

“At Forest School we embrace the weather. Whether splashing in puddles, exploring in the rain or enjoying snowy adventures, children learn that outdoor learning can be enjoyed in every season.”
