At Fulwell Infant School Academy, our History curriculum is designed to develop children’s curiosity about the past and help them understand how life has changed over time. In the Early Years Foundation Stage, History is taught through the Understanding the World area of learning, where children begin to explore their own lives, families, celebrations and experiences, developing an awareness of the past and how things change over time. As children move through the school, they learn about significant people, events and places from local, national and world history.
Through stories, artefacts, photographs and historical sources, children learn to ask questions, compare the past with the present and develop an understanding of chronology. Children revisit key historical concepts throughout the school so that knowledge, vocabulary and enquiry skills are remembered and built upon year after year. By exploring topics such as the Victorians, castles, the Great Fire of London, Florence Nightingale and Grace Darling, children develop an appreciation of the people and events that have shaped the world around them.
